Advanced bronchoscopy course joins CHEST simulation education
September 8, 2022
Glenview, Illinois – A new simulation course led by the American College of Chest Physicians
(CHEST) welcomed learners to the CHEST headquarters on August 26 and 27.
The new course, Advanced Diagnostic Bronchoscopy for Peripheral Nodules, teaches leading-edge updates on bronchoscopic techniques for diagnosing
lung lesions and masses in a safer way than was previously available. The course includes demonstrations and hands-on opportunities with bronchoscopic navigation, robotic platforms and radial endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) using state-of-the-art systems.
Targeted to physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and fellows from the fields of pulmonology, thoracic surgery and oncology, the course covered:
- Indications and outcomes of bronchoscopic techniques for peripheral lung lesions
- Diagnostic yields and potential complications of specific bronchoscopy platforms
- Nodule characteristics that increase the diagnostic yield of bronchoscopic techniques
- Procedural steps for novel bronchoscopic modalities
“I’m proud to be a co-chair for this new course with my CHEST colleague, Dr. Otis Rickman,” says Septimiu D. Murgu, MD, FCCP, Immediate Past Chair of the CHEST Education Committee and Professor of Medicine with the University of Chicago. “Simulation is a quintessential element of procedural education for practicing clinicians, and courses like this give access to the latest technologies and techniques taught by expert faculty. By evaluating lung nodules in novel ways, these emerging bronchoscopic technologies have the potential to diagnose lung cancer even earlier, and safer. This course is the first of its kind as it incorporates all available bronchoscopy platforms to diagnose pulmonary nodules.”
Accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), CHEST currently offers 24 courses with four new courses planned for 2023. Courses in the CHEST simulation lab offer:
- High-fidelity simulation
- Hands-on learning
- Interactive Q&A
- Case-based education
- Small groups
- Prerecorded lectures and videos
- New technology
- Skills assessments
“The course offerings of CHEST are truly unparalleled to other organizations,” says Robert Musacchio, PhD, CEO of the CHEST. “Our facility is able to offer the caliber of education one may only find at a top-tier hospital or training program, with the latest technology and personalized attention from internationally renowned clinical educators and thought leaders. CHEST is actively translating our in-person, immersive simulation experience to online on-demand programming that will allow us to reach more learners, and ultimately enable more patients to benefit from the fast-evolving diagnostic and treatment options.”
At the upcoming CHEST Annual Meeting 2022, taking place in Nashville on October 16-19, there are 52 on-site educational courses including simulation opportunities. To learn more and to register for the CHEST meeting, visit:
