CHEST Annual Meeting 2024

After 35 years away, the CHEST Annual Meeting's return to Boston brought record-setting numbers. The meeting featured a variety of immersive learning opportunities and, for the first time, included a curriculum track on health equity, which showcased 39 sessions.

Premium education

In addition to featuring top-tier research and 300 clinical sessions, CHEST 2024 debuted new educational digital games, live games, and a live escape room experience. CHEST also hosted eight Master Classes, including one covering interstitial lung disease (ILD) that attracted 83 registrants. 3,705 accepted abstracts and case reports showed the increased interest of new PCCM researchers, and the abstracts serve as a vital resource of the latest research for CHEST journal portfolio to source content.

Attendees practiced their clinical skills during simulation training led by renowned CHEST faculty. The 30 on-site courses included Transesophageal Echocardiography for the Intensivist, Airway Foreign Body Management, Bronchoscopic Management of Bleeding, and many others.

Community engagement

CHEST partnered with three local Boston organizations as part of our CHEST Community Connections initiative. CHEST volunteers spent one morning on-site with the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP), distributing health resources and education to BHCHP clients as part of the HER Saturday Clinic and Respite programs. CHEST 2024 also featured:

  • the third annual CHEST After Hours, partnering for the first time with The Nocturnists podcast for an emotional evening event that featured personal stories and reflections celebrating the whole clinician;
  • education tracks for advance practice providers, trainees, health equity, and more;
  • an increase in engagement of 110% for the on-site escape room and 86.4% for CHEST games, compared with 2023; and
  • a collaborative mural in the Wellness Zone, which was donated to BHCHP.

#CHEST2024

Social media videos were a great way to build excitement and engage attendees during the meeting, including a moving countdown to the first day of the conference. The Opening Session and CHEST Challenge were live streamed to audiences who may not have been able to take time away from the hospital. Throughout the meeting, CHEST shared daily recap videos and other posts to engage attendees, including a spotlight on mother/daughter CHEST members.

CHEST 2024

CHEST Daily News provided coverage of the meeting for attendees who may have missed a session and for those at home wanting to follow along. Producing the highly valued meeting program (We ran out!) and 16 emails before, during, and following the conference, CHEST Daily News provided 70 pieces of content covering the annual meeting.


Boston gave us the largest media presence in recent years with 22 on-site press attendees and 17 off-site reporters requesting the press kit and on-demand access to content following the meeting. This generated 95 interview requests, as well as 175 articles and videos covering the conference, by publications such as HealthDay, Healio Pulmonology, Medscape, Pulmonology Advisor, Physician’s Weekly, NEJM Journal Watch, The American Journal of Managed Care, Rare Disease Advisor, and MedPage Today.

CHEST INFECTIONS AND DISASTER RESPONSE NETWORK
The IV fluid shortage triggered by Hurricane Helene underscored a persistent issue in health care that has been exacerbated by natural disasters. An article and infographic shared how to implement strategies to effectively combat the shortage.

AIRWAYS DISORDERS NETWORK
An infographic broke down recommendations for airway clearance techniques. It aids clinicians in recognizing who may benefit from techniques such as use of a high-frequency chest wall oscillating vest, positive expiratory pressure device, airway oscillating device, and more.

CHEST is committed to innovative and effective clinician education to improve medical aptitude, clinical skills, and patient outcomes. Offerings include enduring learning formats such as the CHEST SEEK® Library and new CHEST Curriculum Pathways—featuring peer-reviewed, case-based questions and state-of-the-art, hands-on learning through interactive resources, knowledge-based gaming, and simulation courses.

Hands-on education through simulation

CHEST’s clinical education program is internationally recognized and accredited. In 2024, CHEST offered 22 different courses at the Innovation, Simulation, and Training Center at CHEST Headquarters in Glenview, Illinois—including new courses on bronchoscopic lung volume reduction/persistent air leak management and advanced extracorporeal support for respiratory and cardiac failure.

Continuing to innovate

In 2024, CHEST education evolved to meet the needs of learners around the world.

  • CHEST hosted seven Clinical Immersion courses for 800 industry partner attendees, providing a deeper clinical understanding of the disease states behind the products attendees are actively promoting.
  • With a grant/cooperative agreement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Department of Health and Human Services, CHEST launched an educational program on community-acquired pneumonia in adults, featuring a session at CHEST 2024 and an interactive infographic with nearly 6,000 views.
  • CHEST created a new interactive infographic as part of a grant program administered by the Council of Medical Specialty Societies. The program also featured selected journal CHEST® articles on ILD and a podcast.

CHEST gaming had an impressive 2024, with a 44.3% increase in engagement compared with the prior year. The organization recently received an ELB Learning award for Unveiling RSV and has games featured on the education hub of the American Medical Association, including Hocus POCUS Diagnosis! With most offering CME credit/MOC points, CHEST games mix advanced education with interactive participation and peer-to-peer competition.

Targeted learning with CHEST Curriculum Pathways

The CHEST Curriculum Pathway product line doubled in 2024 and now includes four offerings in asthma, lung cancer, ILD, and pulmonary hypertension. Learners can access the best of CHEST’s educational resources tailored to their topic of interest with credit claiming opportunities for the whole care team and certificates of completion. Free sample modules for each topic area are also available.
